This inspiring 3 hour program lead by Artist and teacher Judith M. Atkinson is designed for painters of all levels. It's a study course on contemporary painting practices and principles using a variety of media of your choice, oil or acrylic or watercolour. The course will cover colour theory, composition, skill building and technique along with masterwork painting references. Dive and enrich your creative talents.

Art Focus Artists' Association Demonstrations

Art Focus operates free demonstrations from local artists and experts. The demonstrations are open to the public, and anyone is welcome to attend. All demonstrations take place from 7-9pm at The Outlet in Leigh Square, Port Coquitlam. The 2010 / 2011 schedule is:

Drawing Realistic Portraits with Graphite
October 16 and 17, 10AM-4PM
This two day workshop will help you to bring your drawings to a whole new level of realism and depth. The first day we will combine short demos followed by hands on applications of each technique. The second day we will apply these techniques create a completed portrait from your reference photo. You will learn how to choose great reference photos, an easy way to create accurate line drawings right from the start, realistic shading and textural techniques and more. Whether you are a portrait, landscape or still life artist your drawing skills will reach a new level of realism by the end of the workshop.

Demystifying Public Art Commissions

Sunday, July 11, 1-4:30PM
Alliance for Arts & Culture, 938 Howe St, Suite 100, Vancouver, BC
This workshop will examine different types of public art competitions and how to pursue, win and complete one. With a growing awareness amongst politicians, civic leaders and developers of the benefit of public art, more and more public art competitions are being set. With the intention of demystifying the process for artists, the session will begin with an artist’s talk by Adrian Göllner. He will illustrate the relationship of studio-based artwork and site-specific work to public art commissions. Then, after breaking down and discussing the commission process, participants will consider an actual public art commission opportunity, create a concept for it and then assess the approach from the perspective of a jury.

 

East Meets West Watercolours with Joy Kirkwood

Wednesday, May 12 - Wednesday, June 2 • 7 – 9PM at Place des Arts
Experience the beauty and poetic flair of Chinese brush painting combined with the structure of traditional Western watercolour techniques. Comparing and blending the two approaches frees one up to discover a third way of painting - your own. No previous artistic experience required.

 

Mastering Acrylics

Saturday, May 29 & Sunday, May 30 • 9:30AM – 4:30PM at Evergreen Cultural Centre
Learn everything you need to know to master acrylic painting. Techniques that are successful when using oil paints or watercolours do not often yield good results when applied to acrylic paints. The focus will be on learning the specific properties of acrylics and how you can use them to achieve fantastic results. You will also learn the forgotten ‘golden rules’ of the great painters on how to create vibrant, luminous paint effects in any medium. Come prepared to take notes, ask questions, and paint.
